Discoveries Soccer Club Sends Four Teams to US Southern Regional Championships in June

June 18, 2017

Discoveries Soccer Club has four club teams, DSC 01 Lady Gold, DSC 03 Lady Gold, DSC 04 Lady Gold, and DSC 04 Gold, that qualified to compete in the US Southern Region Three Club Championship in Greensboro, NC beginning June 23rd.  The teams will play a round robin format the first three days with the goal of advancing to the finals and a chance to compete for the USYSA national club championship.

Sending four teams to the US Club Regionals is a monumental achievement for DSC. The 01 Lady Gold and 03 Lady Gold teams qualified as state champions. The 04 Lady Gold is one of 16 teams over 12 states that qualified for their age group with no goals given up in state cup play.

“The success of the girls program this year is a clear indication of the hard work the staff and players have put in this year. Each one of these teams have set the bar for future Discoveries teams, which is very exciting for the club and our younger players coming through. Having three girls teams represented at the USYS Regionals this year speaks volumes to the program and what the players have been able to accomplish. As a staff, we are extremely proud of all the girls in our program,” said Aaron Weldon, Girls Junior Academy Director.

The 04 Gold team qualified by winning a tough third place game with a chance to qualify for regionals on the line. The game went into overtime with the game winner decided by penalty kicks. “There were no goals scored and penalties had to decide the winner. Carter Nunnery stopped two penalties and our guest player, Brayden Hunsucker scored the winning penalty and qualified us for Regionals, said Nicky De Vogel, 04 Boys Gold coach.

“Best wishes to everyone attending USYSA Regionals at the end of June. 01 Lady Gold, 03 Lady Gold, 04 Lady Gold and 04 Gold will all represent DSC in Greensboro this month. It is a watershed achievement for our club, as never before have we had so many teams qualify for this leg of the USYS National Championship Series. It is a testament to all the hard work and dedication of everyone involved to see such a DSC contingent go up against the best in the Region. We are excited of the experience and grateful for everything people are doing to put DSC on the National map,” said Dave Carton, Executive Director.

He has already achieved a lot in his short career, but we are confident that Atlanta United will give Samy the platform to go on and achieve his dreams in football. Samy has been the beneficiary of many, many opportunities through GPS, and the GPS Bayern program, and we hope many more players can take advantage of these opportunities just as Samy has.
