DSC 93 Green win SCYSA U16 State Classic Cup

Date Posted: 11/16/2009

Congratulations to DSC 93 Green coach John Arevalo and team members who won the U16 SCYSA Publix Presidents Medal Cup this weekend in Spantanburg, SC, Nov. 14-15, 2009. They played Columbia United 93 Boys Cresent 1 for the Championship match and won 2-1 in double overtime.

All season long, the 93 Green used team work to place second overall in the Classic 1 division of the Presidents Medal League. It was only fitting that their team work resulted in their State Cup win. Their regular season record of 8-2-1, put them in second place overall, however, they had the most wins, the second highest goals scored with 31 and the least goals against with 8 in the league.

The first match of the weekend was a 1-0 victory against CESA 93 Classic I. It was a very hard fought match with Walker Todd putting the game winner in the net with a diving header off of Carson McGinn's corner kick. The 2nd match was a 4-0 victory against CESA 93 United with goals from Walker Todd assist by Dean Walters, Andrew Arevalo assist by Michael Twitty, and 2 goals from Andrew Skow assists by Carson McGinn and Dillon Cossin. To advance to the finals the team needed a tie or win. The match against Lakelands Toros SC Fire was close throughout. Andrew Arevalo, assisted by Dillon Cossin scored an early goal at 1:10 into match and the Fire answered quickly to tie it up. It was an exciting game as both teams had several quality opportunities. The match ended in a tie and this meant the team advanced to the finals against Columbia United 93 Cresent 1.

These 2 teams had played to a 1-1 tie during the regular season, so a great game was expected by all. The Championship game was as DOC Dom Wren commented, (his 90 Green team won a National Championship in July), "one of the most exciting games he ever saw". The 93 Green finished the first half up 1-0 with a goal from Eric Sandor, assist by Michael Twitty. Columbia United then tied the match in the second half. The teams went scoreless after the first 10 minute overtime. The second 10 minute overtime was almost completed when Andrew Arevalo, with an assist from Dean Walters, booted a ball from outside the 18 into the upper 90 over the keeper's head for the match winner.

Coach Arevalo adds "Kudos to a brilliant performance by goal keepers Matt Wheeler and Matt Hutches with combined saves of 38 and 2 goals against. I am very proud of all my boys! They all played a vital part of this team and its accomplishments. They stepped out on the pitch with the confidence of champions and played to the final whistle. Very well done gentlemen!! Congrats."

As South Carolina State Classic Cup Champion, the team has earned a spot representing South Caolina in the USYS Region 3 Presidents Cup June 10-13, 2010, in Broken Arrow, OK.

DSC is proud of Coach Arevalo and players for a great season and State Cup Championship!
