What a fantastic month it has been for the 90 Green. They won the 2009 SCYSA Challenge Cup last December, the Southern Regional Tournament and now the USYS U18 National Championship. This is the first ever SC National Championship.
Discoveries U18 Boys won the National Championship Sunday morning with a 2-1 victory over Javanon (Kentucky). This is the first SC Youth Soccer National Champion team. Furthermore, goalkeeper Clayton Gladden, received the Golden Glove award for outstanding keeper during the tournament and striker, Sebastian Velasquez, received the Golden Boot award for most goals scored during the tournament.
Only four South Carolina teams have ever qualified for the US Youth Soccer National Championships, two of which qualified this year (Under-18 Boys DSC 90 Green and Under-16 Boys CESA 92 Premier). DSC has gone undefeated through state and regional championships and was an offensive force in the National Championship round robin scoring 15 goals. Standing in their path to the historic title for South Carolina was returning national qualifier Javanon 91 (KY). Enzo Martinez scored for DSC 90 Green in the 7th minute off a serve from teammate Crayton Benson for the 1-0 lead. Just before half, it was Benson again on the assist, this time to Juan Velasquez in the 44th minute for the 2-0 DSC lead. Javanon’s Vinicius Paiva would cut the DSC lead in half in the 50th minute (2-1). The South Carolina defense would hold and go on to claim the state’s first title with the 2-1 DSC win.
